An Agreement for Cooperation within the EdgePL Project

An Agreement for Cooperation within the EdgePL Project

A cooperation agreement has been signed to launch EdgePL – a major national initiative aimed at building a pilot system of edge computing nodes across Poland. The signing took place at the Poznan University of Technology, where representatives of the consortium — including the Director of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences — formalized their commitment to the project.

EdgePL is a research and implementation project designed to establish the technical, organisational, and legal framework which is necessary to deploy a nationwide edge-node infrastructure. The effort aligns with the objectives of Decision (EU) 2022/2481, which sets out the European Union’s “Path to the Digital Decade” programme for 2030.

By developing the foundations of an edge computing ecosystem, the project aims to strengthen Poland’s digital resilience, support low-latency services, and enable next-generation applications in areas such as AI, public services, and advanced networking.

Here is what the project is expected to deliver:

  • Designing a preliminary architecture for the national edge-node system. This involves selecting transmission technologies, consulting with application providers and telecom operators, and choosing optimal node locations across the country.
  • Defining technical requirements for both the computing and network infrastructure, followed by a formal procurement process to select hardware and service providers.
  • Selecting key applications to operate on the edge infrastructure, adapting them as needed, and creating algorithms to automatically route users to the best-performing edge node.
  • Deploying a pilot network, consisting of 32 prototype edge-node locations — including six dedicated to supporting public administration. This testbed will be made available to end users for real-world evaluation.
  • Producing a comprehensive final report, summarizing the technical and formal conditions required to implement a full-scale national edge-node system.

EdgePL was launched by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the Law on Higher Education and Science.

  • Total project budget: 11,000,000 PLN
  • Funding allocated to OPI PIB: 1,506,250 PLN

The project is coordinated by the Poznań University of Technology and implemented by a consortium of leading institutions:

  • Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences / Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS)
  • OPI National Information Processing Institute (OPI PIB)
  • Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity

The initiative is financed from the state budget with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
