Cybersecurity threats discussed at the Biogas Congress

The jubilee 10th Biogas Congress, held on December 16–17, 2025, became a platform for exchanging experiences in the fields of digitalization and security in modern energy systems. The event paid particular attention to the growing cyber threats that, amid ongoing digital transformation, increasingly affect the biogas and biomethane sectors.

During a presentation prepared by Gerard Frankowski, Head of the ICT Security Department at PCSS, key issues related to protecting systems from cyberattacks were addressed. The talk covered both universal aspects of cybersecurity—such as attacker motivations and challenges in implementing high security standards—and specific risks arising from the unique characteristics of the biogas industry. It was emphasized that analyzing the logic behind attackers’ actions in the context of industry-specific conditions allows for the precise identification of potential attack scenarios.

The discussion highlighted the strategic importance of protecting energy installations, whose malfunction due to digital interference could lead to serious social consequences or even physical disasters. In addressing these risks, the presentation outlined available support mechanisms for small and medium-sized enterprises through initiatives such as CyberSec EDIH – National Centre for Secure Digital Transformation and AgriFood TEF.

The event concluded with numerous follow-up discussions, confirming the sector’s need for specialized technical expertise. Participants expressed hope for continued collaboration, including the development of dedicated sectoral workshops led by ICT security specialists—an important step toward strengthening the digital resilience of modern energy enterprises.
