ECHOLOT Project: The first issue of the newsletter dedicated to digital cultural heritage has been released

The first edition of the official newsletter for the European project ECHOLOT (European Cultural Heritage Optimised Linked Open Tools) has been published. The newsletter serves as a knowledge compendium on innovative methods for enriching and sharing cultural heritage data using artificial intelligence and semantic technologies.

The ECHOLOT project builds a technological bridge between cultural institutions and the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH). At the heart of the system is an advanced ecosystem based on the MediaWiki software suite, tailored to meet the rigorous needs of researchers and professionals. Through the proprietary NeoWiki interface, users will gain access to an intuitive environment for collaborative data correction and editing. This environment will combine the advanced capabilities of knowledge graphs with the user-friendliness of wiki-type platforms.

The first issue of the ECHOLOT newsletter highlights:

  • Roadmap and Milestones – An overview of the initial assumptions and main system architecture elements, including planned work on MediaWiki extensions to improve RDF data handling and integration with ECCCH and EOSC infrastructures.

  • Progress on Case Studies – A presentation of the first tests of the NeoWiki platform in real-world research scenarios, covering fields such as literary bibliography, media art, and Basque cultural heritage.

  • Latest Industry Trends – A review of interoperability standards (Linked Open Data) and methods for using Wikibase to build global semantic data hubs.

  • Collaboration Opportunities – An invitation to test ECHOLOT tools and co-create open-source software that will feed into the Wikimedia and ECCCH ecosystems.

The Role of PCSS in the ECHOLOT Project

The Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS) plays a key role as the technical lead in the project, heading the work package responsible for infrastructure and interoperability (WP2).

As part of these responsibilities, the PCSS team is accountable for:

  • Developing the overall system architecture and data exchange mechanisms between distributed repositories and the cloud-based NeoWiki instance.

  • Integrating open-source software components based on MediaWiki solutions with the shared ECCCH cloud, ensuring scalability and security.

  • Potentially ensuring high performance for AI data enrichment processes by leveraging HPC infrastructure capabilities.

Thanks to PCSS’s expertise in advanced networking and digitization, the NeoWiki system will become a key tool for European cultural institutions, enabling them to publish data in line with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
