Madrid as the Data Capital: A Summary of Data Spaces Symposium 2026

The fourth edition of the most important event dedicated to European data spaces has come to a close. Following successful gatherings in The Hague, Frankfurt, and Warsaw, this time digital sector leaders met in Madrid. This year’s theme—“Accelerating adoption. Increasing impact”—set the direction for discussions on the future of the global data-driven economy.

The Poznańskie Centrum Superkomputerowo‑Sieciowe (PCSS) was represented at the symposium by Joanna Kowalska from the Digital Libraries and Knowledge Platforms Department. Two days of intensive sessions (10–11 February) resulted in concrete conclusions and presentations of solutions that will shape Europe’s digital landscape in the coming years. The key topics included:

  • Foundations for Artificial Intelligence: It was emphasized that the development of secure and ethical AI is not possible without trusted, high-quality data spaces.

  • Standards and Interoperability: Another milestone was reached toward international technology harmonization. Consistent standards are essential for data to circulate freely and securely across different market sectors.

  • Market Deployments and Real Impact: Panel discussions showcased best practices and ready-to-use solutions that are already improving the efficiency of the European economy.

This year’s edition was also unique due to the first-ever European Data Spaces Awards ceremony. These awards recognize the most innovative projects setting standards in data sharing and management across Europe.

The success of the event was the result of close cooperation among leading industry organizations. Special recognition goes to the organizers: Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC), Big Data Value Association (BDVA), Gaia‑X European Association for Data and Cloud, and International Data Spaces Association (IDSA)—for creating a platform for substantive dialogue.

We thank all participants for the inspiring exchange of knowledge. Together, we are building a connected, transparent, and modern data economy. See you at the next stages of the digital transformation!
