On 1–2 December 2025, the plenary meeting of the international OpenAgri project, focused on developing open technologies for agriculture, was held in Ghent, Belgium. PCSS presented the results of the Polish pilot – an intelligent potato crop irrigation system that increased yields by as much as 26% compared to the reference field, while simultaneously minimizing water consumption.
The meeting in Ghent was an opportunity to summarize the progress of the OpenAgri project. The IoT Technologies Department at PSNC co-develops the pilot dedicated to smart irrigation of potato and sugar beet crops, using a low-power LoRaWAN wireless network.
A key achievement was the deployment of the solution during the 2025 season on potato fields in Sielinko, in cooperation with the Greater Poland Agricultural Advisory Centre in Poznań (WODR). The use of PCSS’ most advanced smart irrigation algorithm allowed an increase in yields by 26% compared to the naturally irrigated reference field, confirming the high efficiency of the system while minimizing water resource consumption.
The IoT Technologies Department is responsible for the infrastructure and software of the intelligent irrigation system, as well as for its edge and cloud algorithms. As part of the work, functional prototypes of soil moisture and temperature sensors were developed, and the system was integrated with meteorological data from the eDWiN advisory platform. Integration with open services developed within the OpenAgri framework was also ensured.
The pilot’s progress report was presented by Radosław Taraciński. The project also involves the team of Dr. Eng. Raul Palma from the Data Analytics and Semantics Department, responsible for preparing data exchange standards for agriculture (OpenAgri Common Semantic Model).
The Polish pilot is conducted in cooperation with the Greater Poland Agricultural Advisory Centre and the Łukasiewicz – Poznań Institute of Technology.
