PCSS projects presented in GÉANT CONNECT Magazine

The June edition of the CONNECT magazine, focused around the GÉANT’s network and community, featured an article centred on next-generation infrastructure. These initatives are carried out within four leading projects, led by PCSS and based on the PIONIER network. 

CONNECT is a magazine focused on the european research and educational network GÉANT, serving as a forum of knowledge exchange between scientific communities across Europe and the world. In its newest edition there’s a new article which highlights the activity of PCSS, a long-time member of the GÉANT community. 

The article features four projects carried out by the Poznań Centre withing the EU programme:

PIAST-AI

An innovative ecosystem for science, the public sector, SMEs and startups. We offer powerful computing power, advanced AI services and expertise to support the development and introduction of newest technologies in Poland and across Europe. 

PIAST-Q

PIAST-Q is a quantum EuroHPC computer located at PCSS in Poznań. 

The quantum computer is based on the trapped-ion technology. In such system the electromagnetic fields trap charged ions, which are then manipulated by using precision lasers to perform quantum operations that ensure long coherence times. These systems are known for their accuracy and are being developed for various purposes connected to quantum computing.

The new system offers several unique features, which make it attractive for end-users. It provides high fidelity qubits, long coherence times, universal quantum gates, and all-to-all connectivity.  

PIONIER-Q 

The PIONIER-Q projects aims to provide the quantum-key distribution infrastructure and the quantum communication network, by using the already existing network of optic-fiber PIONIER infrastructure. Selected network sockets will be connected with the main network and the device providing the main power supply (QKD). The QKD devices will transmit encryption keys symetrically to both locations, via assigned optic-fiber connections. The key will change periodically and will be used to encrypt data transmitted between locations, which send their data via a standard transmission channels. The quantum encryption key will be transmitted via a quantum channel. In accordance with the principles of quantum mechanics, it won’t be possible to intercept information transmitted via such channel. Any attempt to overhear information will interrupt the key, rendering it useless and signaling the event. QKD technology will support encryptors and significantly enhance the security of transmitted data.

GraviQ
GraviQ is an innovative research infrastructure project, which aims to construct mobile quantum gravimeter and to start the first Polish synchronous network of such devices. The project involves the implementation of a groundbreaking technology for the measurement of gravitational acceleration using quantum mechanical phenomena. 

At the PCSS booth during this year’s TNC various EU-funded projects were presented, namely ones from the European Funds for Smart Economy programme, such as ŚWIATOWID, WEDROWNIQ, Q-ChronoS and many more.
