PIONIER Network: Connection to Vienna Internet eXchange Launched

Last week, a new PIONIER network connection to the VIX (Vienna Internet eXchange) peering point in Vienna was officially launched, marking a strategic step in the development of Poland’s network infrastructure. This key investment opens the door to direct data exchange with over 180 global operators and content providers, significantly strengthening the position of Polish science and the digital economy within the European IT ecosystem.

The launch of the new route on the Poznań–Vienna segment was implemented using advanced GÉANT Managed Wavelength Service technology, enabling an impressive bandwidth of 100 Gb/s. The deployment of modern VRF-type solutions allows urban networks to manage data traffic even more efficiently, directly improving the performance of the entire system.

Thanks to the new node in the Austrian capital, the PIONIER network now provides direct access to three key traffic exchange points in Europe: AMS-IX in AmsterdamDE-CIX in Frankfurt, and the newly added VIX in Vienna.

This technical success was achieved by Szymon Trocha and Tomasz Szewczyk from the Network Infrastructure and Services Department, whose work has enabled further development of reliable and high-speed infrastructure dedicated to Polish scientific institutions.
