EBRAINS IMPLEMENT is a Horizon Europe project that prepares the European research infrastructure EBRAINS for its transition into a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC). The project represents the transitional phase between the current organisational structure of EBRAINS and a sustainable European research infrastructure supported by the long-term commitment of participating Member States.
The project will develop the governance model, participation framework for Member States, integration mechanisms for National Nodes, funding model, collaboration with other European research infrastructures, and industry engagement framework. Its main outcome will be the legal, organisational and operational foundations required for the establishment of EBRAINS EDIC.
The European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) is a new European Union legal instrument designed to establish and operate strategic digital infrastructures on a long-term basis. For EBRAINS, the transition to an EDIC marks a shift from a project-based funding model towards a sustainable governance framework based on the long-term commitment of participating countries, ensuring the continuous development of services for the European research community. Accordingly, the EBRAINS IMPLEMENT project lays both the legal and organisational foundations of the future EDIC and develops the cooperation model for National Nodes, enabling the effective use of existing national investments in research and digital infrastructures.
Poland’s participation in the project provides an opportunity to actively contribute to shaping the future EBRAINS EDIC. This is particularly important in the context of the national EBRAINS-PL ecosystem, established by a consortium of eighteen research and infrastructure organisations working together to advance brain research and the application of artificial intelligence in neuroscience.
The project also strengthens links between the Polish research community and other European initiatives, particularly the European Partnership for Brain Health, while creating new opportunities to leverage national investments in high-performance computing, data management and artificial intelligence.
PCSS contributes to the project through three activities supporting the establishment of the future EBRAINS EDIC:
- Task 3.5 – EOSC Readiness Strategy and Alignment with Other European Initiatives and Projects.
- Task 4.2 – User Landscape Analysis and Targeted Onboarding Strategy.
- Task 5.3 – Plan and Implementation of an Industry Onboarding Workflow.
Within the project, PCSS brings the perspective of a developing National Node together with the experience gained in establishing the Polish EBRAINS-PL consortium. This contribution helps ensure that the solutions developed within the project address the needs of emerging Member States and growing transdisciplinary research communities.
