FBC-TENE: INCREASING THE ACCESSIBILITY OF DIGITAL SCIENCE AND CULTURE RESOURCES IN DIGITAL LIBRARIES FEDERATION THROUGH THROUGH THE ACQUISITION OF TEXT AND MUSIC REPRESENTATION

The objective of the FBC-TeNe project is to increase accessibility of digital collections of the Polsih public sector institutions of culture and science through development of the Digital Libraries Federation service in the scope of searching digital objects on the basis of their text and sheet music content. The service has over 6 million records for digital objects in many forms: from text documents through audiovisual materials to so called “musicals” (e.g. sheet music documents).

Currently the search of digital objects is carried out with the use of metadata provided by the cultural and scientific institutions in Poland that cooperate with the search engine. Increasing accessibility of digital collections of public sector institutions will be possible by using OCR and OMR techniques. In the case of text documents which have been digitized by scanning, it is necessary to carry out operations of text representation extraction, e.g. OCR (Optical Character Recognition). In the case of scans of music pieces, on the other hand, it is necessary to carry out an operation to retrieve the musical representation, e.g. OMR (Optical Music Recognition) in order to obtain the symbolic music notation and to convert it into different formats (e.g. MIDI). It is also planned to make available the collection of folk music collected and compiled by the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and other institutions as part of the MIRELA music digital library, which have not been aggregated in the FBC so far. Moreover, the functions of the FBC portal will be enriched by improving its mobile version, creating modern filters, which standardize access to the resources, and introduce easier access to the resources for people with disabilities, especially the blind and visually impaired.

  • Increasing accessibility of the collections of Polish cultural institutions online by expanding the service of the Digital Libraries Federation (FBC) – extending aggregation from metadata of materials to the content;
  • Making available rich musical resources, especially folk music, collected and compiled by Institute of Arts PAS and other institutions or organizations as part of the digital music library aggregated with FBC;
  • Project partners: Institute of Arts of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
