The PIAST-AI Factory is a groundbreaking initiative designed to create an innovative ecosystem for academia, the public sector, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and startups by advancing artificial intelligence technologies and strengthening the digital sovereignty of both Poland and Europe. By providing accessible computing power, advanced AI services, and expert support, the project will enable entities to become active participants in the modern data and AI-driven economy.
Its primary objectives will be achieved through the creation of an advanced technological environment based on High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, cloud services, integration with quantum solutions (the PIAST-Q computer), and ready-to-use programming and analytical tools.
Engagement from the scientific, business, and social communities will be fostered through free or low-cost access to computing power, support from experienced engineers and experts, and skills developed via the AI Factory Academy, which addresses social, educational, and business needs.
PIAST-AI supports the development of innovation and the commercialization of applications through both internal and external activities. Internally, users will receive comprehensive support throughout the AI solution lifecycle: from concept analysis and secure data management (compliant with GDPR and AI Act standards) to model selection and training (e.g., LLMs, quantum-enhanced AI), and finally to verification, integration, deployment, and evaluation. As a result, the algorithms being deployed will become safer, more transparent, and more ethical (Trustworthy AI), thereby enhancing their reliability in critical business and scientific processes.
Enabling Polish and European entities to utilize sovereign public infrastructure opens up new opportunities for scaling businesses, building competitive advantages, and creating innovative services without the need for costly in-house investments. The project aligns with the emerging network of European AI Factories operating under the aegis of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking; it fosters the continent’s technological sovereignty and represents the first such factory in Poland. Furthermore, the Moldovan AI Factory Antenna (FAIMA, strategically linked to PIAST-AI) will serve as a key component of the network. The infrastructure offers support to SMEs and startups in the form of a testing environment and research proving grounds (including AerospaceLab in Kąkolewo).
The outcomes and implementations will be tested across numerous areas and industries. The applicability of the solutions and the integration of AI technologies will encompass sectors such as health and medicine (e.g., image analysis in gastroenterology), industry and manufacturing (predictive maintenance, quality control), agriculture (precision application of fertilizers and water), smart cities and the environment (forecasting changes, energy optimization), as well as the hard sciences and cultural heritage.
