Dariah.lab: cultural heritage documentation

Thanks to the Dariah.lab infrastructure, the first pilot projects for the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage resources have been implemented in 2023. Dariah.lab is a research infrastructure for the humanities and arts, built as part of the DARIAH-PL project. It serves to acquire, store and integrate cultural data from the humanities and social sciences, and to process, visualise and share digital resources.

One of these datasets was the digital documentation of the disappearing cultural heritage of Poles living in the Carpathian Bukovina (on Ukrainian and Romanian territory), carried out under the banner #Digital Bukovina. The digitisation work was carried out in support of a scientific project conducted by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Digital Competence Center of the University of Warsaw.

The documentation work was multidimensional. The stories, customs and traditional songs of the inhabitants were recorded with professional video cameras. Drones and sensors were used to digitally document local architecture and monuments for 3D photogrammetry. Aerial photographs were also taken of the entire area of the villages surveyed. In addition, omnidirectional cameras were used to capture the topography of the villages and the traditional spaces of the houses. Traditional digitisation of archival documents and photographs was also carried out.
