EuroHPC Summit 2023: European Supercomputing Excellence in the Exascale Era

The EuroHPC Summit 2023 conference was hosted in Gothenburg from March 20 to 23, bringing together representatives of the largest HPC centers from across Europe. The event was attended by Norbert Meyer, PhD – Director of Data Processing Technologies Division at the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center.

As in previous editions, this year’s EuroHPC Summit featured numerous debates, meetings and workshops. The panel entitled “Future of Exascale Supercomputing in Europe” was actively attended by Norbert Meyer, PhD – member of The Infrastructure Advisory Group (INFRAG) – an independent group of experts, operating at EuroHPCJU, responsible for defining long-term plans for the development of advanced computing infrastructure in Europe.

The panel discussed the future of exascale systems in Europe and the new generation of supercomputers after 2027. An important aspect of the discussion was the problem of user readiness and preparation of applications to run on such large computer systems. This is manifested in the scalability of applications, the possibility of parallelization, and thus the efficient use of systems. Other topics of discussion included: energy efficiency, preparation for the use of hybrid systems and European RISC V processor architecture. In times of exponentially increasing data volumes in science and industry, a critical component of all systems are the data access management, but also the integration of HPC systems with large research infrastructures (e.g., e-VLBI, LOFAR, WLCG, SKA, XFEL) and repositories that are then used for AI-enabled analysis.
