Quantum Key Distribution in operational networks – live demo

Quantum Key Distribution in operational networks – live demo

The main PSNC live demo at SC22 at the booth #827 is focused on the aspect of secure data transmission in computer networks. The title of the demonstration was: MACsec protocol and Quantum Key Distribution integration in operational environment and devices. PSNC together with Arista and IDQ companies prepared the proof of concept showing possible QKD technology integration with MACsec protocol capable devices. The Arista setup was running MACsec protocol between two optical ports. The novel point was that the encription and decription keys were not generated within the switch, but retrieved from external QKD devices. The QKD keys were exchanged with Arista devices over ETSI GS 014 interface.

The demo shows that the QKD devices and keys can be integrated with operational devices, such as Arista switches. What’s important, the configuration will be further developed and potentially may be used with other QKD devices. It is another step in QKD technology adoption and integration within the existing operational network environment and can further enhance the security of transmitted data using quantum communication.
