PIONIER: Virtualization and Mobility – ISC 2009, Hamburg

The International Supercomputing Conference also known as ISC for the first time gathers the environment of manufacturers, software and system developers and high performance computer users. It is the largest European HPC event, taking place from 23 to 26 of June 2009 in Hamburg. It is already the third time that the PIONIER Consortium represents the Polish science at the accompanying exhibition among 120 other exhibitors from 45 countries.

This conference edition focuses on climate modeling, aeronautics, seismic forecasting, broadly understood visualizing, bioinformatics as well as more fashionable architecture trends like cloud computing. As usual, some technical news appeared, such as more and more popular use of graphical computing processors or the use of Microsoft Surface, a new user interface for interactive visualizing of aerodynamics and air flow between polystyrene models of buildings placed roughly on the device table which plays the role of a large active display.

The 12m2 PIONIER stand presents projects referring to such slogans as Virtuality: DORII, FEDERICA, Public Safety Grid from the PPBW project; and Mobility: the Migratig Desktop, eduroam and grid applications resulting works on GridLab project tools). The central part of this exhibition is backed with a large map of the PIONIER network with the clearly marked five HPC centers: Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw, Wroclaw and Cracow.

The ISC Conference is normally held in Drezno. This time it moved to a significantly wider space of the Hamburg Congress Center. Growing popularity of the event (1375 participants in 2008, over 1500 this year) resulted in prolonging the event by one additional day. Leading brands and those who are just starting, as well as the scientific environments from Europe and elsewhere met another opportunity to make direct acquaintances. The Polish Optical Internet, like in previous years, was the meeting point for the Polish IT companies from all around the world and for PIONIER project partners.
