PSNC Seminar: Dr Zoe Cournia – “HPC for Computer – Aided Drug and Materials Design

We invite you to the next PSNC Open Seminar, which will be held on June 6, 2022 at 14:30. This time the speaker – Dr Zoe Cournia from Biomedical Research Foundation Academy of Athens, will present the topic: “High Performance Computing for Computer-Aided Drug and Materials Design”. The seminar will be available online via the Webex platform.

Dr Zoe Cournia is a researcher at the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens, where she works on drug development for oncology treatment using HPC. She graduated from the Department of Chemistry, University of Athens in 2001 and obtained her PhD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany in 2006. She then worked as a researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Yale University in the USA on computer-assisted drug delivery, and became a lecturer at Yale College in 2009. She received the American Association for Cancer Research Angiogenesis Fellowship (2008), the 2009 Woman of Innovation award from the Connecticut Technology Council, USA, the Marie Curie Fellowship from the European Union (2010), the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award from the American Chemical Society (2014) and the first Ada Lovelace Award from the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (2016). From 2018 to 2021, Dr Cournia was a member of the INFRAG Infrastructure Advisory Group and in 2022 she was appointed as the Greek representative in the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking. She is the deputy editor of the Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling, American Chemical Society and the Greek representative in the Division of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry at the European Chemical Society. She currently teaches in the MSc program “Data Science and Information Technologies” at the Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications, National University of Athens. She is the founder of SME Ingredio, a mobile phone application that informs consumers about the potential risks of chemicals in food and cosmetic products using open, reviewed data.

The meeting, organised as part of PSNC’s Open Seminar series entitled “Challenges for the IT infrastructure of science in the era of digital transformation”, will be moderated by Norbert Meyer, Ph.D., Director of Data Processing Technologies Division at PSNC.
